Practical ways to keep your home safe while you’re away

Installing CCTV

As the summer season quickly approaches, many of us begin to daydream of bright skies, sandy beaches, and lots of rest and relaxation. While these exciting getaways offer the perfect escape from our everyday lives, it’s important to keep in mind that an unsecured home puts you at risk for various security issues.

Read these four tips so you can learn how to protect your home from intruders while you’re away.

  1. Upgrade your door locks

Upgrading your locks can provide an extra layer of protection that can help safeguard your home from intruders.

When upgrading your door locks, there are a few key factors to consider. The first is the type of lock. Deadbolt locks offer more security than traditional knob locks as they have a larger and more secure bolt that is inserted into the door frame. A good quality deadbolt should have a bolt that is at least an inch long. It is recommended that all exterior doors have deadbolts.

  2. Install motion detector lighting

Motion detector lighting can act as a valuable deterrent to those looking to break into your home. That’s because a brightly lit home (and surroundings) are harder to navigate without going unnoticed. This forces potential intruders to think twice.

And should certain thieves remain undeterred by the well-lit property, motion detector lighting will alert you that something or someone is in your yard. Because the lights only turn on when a certain amount of movement is detected, you will receive visual verification of any activity outside of your home.

  3. Install a safe

If you have valuables in your home that you’d like to hide from thieves, investing in a safe is a wise decision. Store your most valued possessions inside to keep them secure at all times.

When you install a safe, consider its location. You’ll want it to be hidden away in a secure room or closet, out of sight from potential burglars. If it’s not possible to hide the safe, you can reinforce the room or area with locks or security cameras to make it more difficult to access.

The type of safe you buy should also depend upon what you’re trying to secure. There are different types of safes. For instance, waterproof safes are great for guarding items such as jewelry and electronics.

  4. Install a home security system

A home security system is one of the most effective ways to protect your home, especially if you plan to be away constantly or for extended periods of time. And since it’s already a system, you’ll be getting several home security devices for a packaged price. Some of the standard inclusions in home security systems are audible alarms, motion sensors, and 24/7 monitoring devices that you can access via your smartphone.
